Marie Curie Cancer Care
Marie Curie Cancer Care is committed to enabling people to die in the place of their choice. The majority of people in the UK are still dying in hospital, the place they least want to be. Marie Curie Cancer Care has made a commitment to reach more people and ensure the highest quality of care at the end of life.
Marie Curie Hospice, Edinburgh
Last year, Marie Curie Hospice, Edinburgh underwent a £2.6m refurbishment project resulting in an increased number of single bedded rooms, en-suite facilities in each room plus direct outdoor access for all patients and their families. The project has made an incredible difference to the care, comfort and dignity we can offer to our patients.
In 2012, the Edinburgh Hospice provided care for almost 1,400 people from across the Lothians. The Hospice has a 25 bed in-patient unit and a fully equipped day service unit. Set in peaceful and relaxing gardens with stunning views of the Pentland Hills, we offer a modern approach to care with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
The hospice offers a level of care and support that is simply not available in hospital, where resources are overstretched and personal comforts at a minimum. Our medical, nursing and support staff draw upon vast experience in palliative care to ensure our patients have the best possible quality of life throughout their illness.
Other patients are visited by our Marie Curie Nurses who generally work at night – spending nine hours in the patient’s home – allowing carers to rest knowing their loved-one is in safe hands. In addition to providing care for the patient, Marie Curie Nurses are also there to support carers at what can be an emotional and stressful time.
Marie Curie Cancer Care relies on the generosity of local residents and companies to help continue its vital work. Whilst it costs £4.7 million per year to run our Hospice in Edinburgh and £20 an hour for a nurse our services are always free but without your support we cannot continue our care for our patients and their families.
